Office Capsule: Pencil Skirt

Let’s continue the conversation with the pencil skirt. Not just any pencil skirt, but the slightly longer pencil skirt that sits effortlessly at your natural waist. I found a good one and I’m going to walk you through the reasons why I bought it and added it to the office capsule, but I will also share why it’s good for stuff outside of the office!

Classic with a twist

Classic style is something I’ve always admired. What is classic style? Think of the timeless pieces that are always on the racks matter what the trends: white button down, a black turtleneck, a wide leg trouser or a pair of loafers or pumps. Sometimes these pieces get lumped into trends and become super popular, but they stick around after the trend wave dies down. A pencil skirt falls into this category.

If you’re anything like me, you like classic pieces, but with a twist. Take any classic piece and change either or all of the the shape, rise, texture, color and length and you have your twist. When I came across this beautiful pencil skirt by ODEEH at The Hive, I knew it would be the only pencil skirt in my closet. Unless I find a similar one in black, of course. I’m having clients ditch the classic tried-and-true knee length pencil skirt for a longer hemline and a higher waistline, adding a much chicer look for the office!

Color

Cinnamon brown is a color I don’t currently own a ton of, but it compliments all of the white, black, heather grey, tan, light blue and tomato red that have taken over my closet. I’m also seeing it everywhere right now! I enjoy adding a new color to the mix every season because it keeps my wardrobe fresh, while blending things all at the same time. I felt confident investing in this piece because I knew it would jive really well with the colors and shapes I already own.

Diagonal lines

Diagonal ruching on the hip of a silk dress, an off-the-shoulder top or a diagonal placket on a blazer are all examples of a diagonal line. I like to wear diagonal lines where I feel self conscious, like my hips and upper body. Diagonal lines travel across the body at an angle and lengthen the body. The skirt stood out to me because the fabric has a tonal diagonal pattern sewn into it, so rather than having the stripes travel horizontally across the widest part of my hips, the pattern visually cuts the hips in half on an angle and helps elongate my lower body. Vertical stripes have the same effect, but diagonal lines create more visual movement (more dynamic and captures the eye).

ODEEH’s fabrics are all made in Italy and focus on creating unique textures and designs, which is why the built-in diagonal pattern that cascades down the front of my new skirt can’t easily be duped.

the fit. Not the outfit, the actual fit.

Last week I talked about structure. This skirt is a great example of quality structure in a fitted silhouette because the fabric and texture mentioned above creates a sturdy fabric with a little stretch. This skirt would flatter anyone with a booty and anyone without a booty. Well-made fabrics like this help smoothen your body creating a beautiful line that help you feel strong and confident. keeping it casual

Don’t forget, all of the styling I’m doing on my Instagram videos is from my office capsule that you can find here, but the options for this skirt extend outside of the workplace. I’ve mentioned this a few times on my stories, but an instant way to take workwear into the weekend is to wear your work bottoms with a casual top and a sexy pair of shoes that go with the chic elegance that work skirts and trousers typically evoke. Check out two weekend options below. Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Tucky belt, which is an incredible tucking tool I’d use for styling tops with skirts.
